why ?

what ?

explanation:
men in upper egypt,
especially among the poor and uneducated,
are fond of having large famlies.
They believe that countless kids r real power.
again kids represent source of income for the family since children r pushed to work and get money.
women then r keen to get numerous kids as the husband might exchange one less fertile wife by
another wife who is more fertile.
2) you, man run as fast as a beast,
but, only yr allotted income (lot or livelihood....) is what u can get.
explanation:
no matter how u r toiling yourself to make money, or to get promoted or to improve your lot in life,
you can change your lot !
this is an echo of a fatalistic attitude to life. it might also echo a philosophy of life which discourages
hard work or struggling to improve one's standard of living. this might also explains why the poor and uneducated
remain so. it explains also why this poor society remains static. nothing new, nothing creative is attained.
this proverb might also depict a conspiracy done by imperialism or by malicious thought to let people accept their
miserable condition or the status quo which could never be changed.
1)
for my son my heart breaks,
for me, my son's heart is stony.
explanation:
it tells about how much a parent is toiling for the well being of his child,
while the child's heart isnaturally not ready to do the same sacrifice .
the proverb suggests the natural parently love which goes as far as doing the utmost
that could be done for the child's interest and safety.
even the most dutiful child is instinctively incapable of returning the same amount of love endowed
on him by his parent.
the prover suggests the diffference between parents and children. only a parent is ready
to go as far as breaking his heart for the welfare of his child. the child cannot
do that coz the child's nature is not possessing the parently instinct.
2)you woman who trust men ,
you r actually trusting water to stick to a seive.
explanation:
it tells about the woman who could be as foolish as trusting men's words or promises.
this woman will see that her trust is misplaced coz men by nature r untrustable beings who can never keep their words.
it suggests this eternal conflict between men and women. men could say simlar things about women,too, or even worse.
proveb:
where you vagabond could u move or go
among knigs or meddling with kings.
explanation:
it tells about a trivial person who pushes himself among vip's business.
it also suggests that a person must know his status in life.
the proverb could be killing one's ambition in life. one should not think
of promotion or ascending the social ladder.a person must stick to his status in life.
it shows also that a person should not compete with others who belong to
a field which is different from his.
proverb:
water belies/ test the diver.
explanation:
it tells about pretenders who must be facing their lies.
it also suggests that to be truthful u must be tested.
it discourages affectation, lies, pretence and exaggeration.
either u can do something or not. if you know diving , jump into water to prove yr skill.

Hazz al-quhuf, also known by its full title Hazz al-quhuf bi sharh qasid Abi Shaduf (Brains Confounded by the Ode of Abu Shaduf Expounded), is a humorous 17th-century Arabic literary text written by Yusuf ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Jawad ibn Khidr al-Shirbini. The main subject of the book is everyday Egyptian rural life.[1] It is known to contain some of the best samples of colloquial Arabic to have survived from before the 19th-century and is considered unusual in pre-20th-century literature for its focus on rural rather than urban themes.[2]

Author
Most of what is known of the author, Yusuf al-Shirbini, comes from his own writing in Hazz al-quhuf and another short work, the only 2 surviving texts he authored; he does not appear in any of the biographies of his time.[1]
Yusuf al-Shirbini was born in the first half of the 17th century in Shirbin, a small village in North East Gharbiyya province on the Damietta branch of the Nile in Egypt.[3] He was well-versed in the Arabic science and literature of his day and claimed to have been inspired by Ibn Sudun, the 15th-century Cairene author of Nuzhat al-nufus wa mudhik al-'abus (The Entertainment of Souls and Bringing a Smile to a Scowling Face).[4][5] Scholars suggest that al-Shirbini was part of an educated urban middle class of ulama (Arabic: علماء ʿulamāʾ , "scholars") who moved from the countryside to the city during this period.[6][7]
Themes
Hazz al-quhuf is composed in the style of a literary commentary on a 42-line poem purported to be written by a peasant (Arabic: فلاح, fallāḥ) named Abu Shaduf.[1] In his commentary, al-Shirbini describes different customs of peasants and urban dwellers, and notes regional distinctions between the Sa'idi people of Upper Egypt, people of the Nile Delta in Lower Egypt, and the poorest villages scattered in between.[8] Scholars have interpreted some of the text as a parody of the iltizam (Arabic: التزام) system of taxation from this period in Ottoman history, when the Ottoman state gave up central control over rural taxes.[9] Al-Shirbini deals humorously with peasants, country judges, local tax collectors, and sufis. The focus on ordinary 17th Egyptian peasant life makes this work an anomaly for literature of the period.[5]
The text contains about 6750 words of colloquial Egyptian Arabic prose, and the rest is written in a style that is closer to everyday standard Arabic than literary Arabic.[10] Al-Shirbini makes extensive use of oral material including jokes, recipes, and popular proverbs.[11][5] It has been regarded as an example of the contradictions of the intellectual world during this period.[5]
Publication
Hazz al-quhuf was completed in March of 1686. There are 10 known surviving manuscripts, some of them only partial texts.[1] Hazz al-quhuf was first printed commercially in 1858 at the Egyptian government press in Bulaq, and since then a number of other editions have been published.[12] In 2005, Humphrey Davies published an edition based on a comparison of several manuscripts, which is considered the most accurate and complete edition.[5]

The metrical system of Classical Arabic poetry, like those of classical Greek and Latin, is based on the weight of syllables classified as either "long" or "short". The basic principles of Arabic poetic meter Arūḍ or Arud (Arabic: العروض al-ʿarūḍ) Science of Poetry (Arabic: علم الشعر ʿilm aš-šiʿr), were put forward by Al-Farahidi (786 - 718 AD) who did so after noticing that poems consisted of repeated syllables in each verse. In his first book, Al-Ard (Arabic: العرض al-ʿarḍ), he described 15 types of verse. Al-Akhfash described one extra, the 16th.
A short syllable contains a short vowel with no following consonants. For example, the word kataba, which syllabifies as ka-ta-ba, contains three short vowels and is made up of three short syllables. A long syllable contains either a long vowel or a short vowel followed by a consonant as is the case in the word maktūbun which syllabifies as mak-tū-bun. These are the only syllable types possible in Classical Arabic phonology which, by and large, does not allow a syllable to end in more than one consonant or a consonant to occur in the same syllable after a long vowel. In other words, syllables of the type -āk- or -akr- are not found in classical Arabic.
Each verse consists of a certain number of metrical feet (tafāʿīl or ʾaǧzāʾ) and a certain combination of possible feet constitutes a meter (baḥr).
The traditional Arabic practice for writing out a poem's meter is to use a concatenation of various derivations of the verbal root F-ʿ-L (فعل). Thus, the following hemistich

Classical Arabic has sixteen established meters. Though each of them allows for a certain amount of variation, their basic patterns are as follows, using "-" for a long syllable, "u" for a short one, "x" for a syllable that can be long or short and "o" for a position that can either contain one long or two shorts:

In Standard/Literary Arabic, the verb in its imperfective aspect (al-muḍāri‘) has a subjunctive form called the manṣūb form (منصوب). It is distinct from the imperfect indicative in most of its forms: where the indicative has "-u", the subjunctive has "-a"; and where the indicative has "-na" or "-ni", the subjunctive has nothing at all. (The "-na" ending in the second and third-person plural feminine is different: it marks the gender and number, not the mood, and therefore it is there in both the indicative and subjunctive.)

The subjunctive is used in that-clauses, after Arabic an: urīdu an aktuba "I want to write." However in conditional and precative sentences, such as "if he goes" or "let him go", a different mood of the imperfective aspect, the jussive, majzūm, is used.
In many spoken Arabic dialects, there remains a distinction between indicative and subjunctive; however, it is not through a suffix but rather a prefix.
In Levantine Arabic, the indicative has b- while the subjunctive lacks it:

باحث يصدر معجما للتعبيرات الشعبية المصرية في نهاية القرن العشرين

أرجع باحث مصري المصطلحات الشعبية في بلاده إلى أصول ترجع إلى لغات مختلفة كالتركية والفارسية والايطالية والفرنسية إضافة إلى العامية المصرية التي "تتمتع بثراء غير عادي".
وأصدر سامح فرج في الآونة الأخيرة الجزء الأول من معجم نوعي في طبعة محدودة تحت عنوان (معجم فرج للعامية المصرية والتعبيرات الشعبية للصناع والحرفيين المصريين في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين).
ويضاف المعجم الجديد إلى اجتهادات مصرية سابقة في هذا المجال ولكنها توقفت قبل عشرات السنين وأبرزها (قاموس العادات والتقاليد والتعابير المصرية) الذي نشره عام1953 الكاتب المصري أحمد أمين (1886 - 1954) الذي تولى عمادة كلية الآداب جامعة القاهرة في نهاية الثلاثينات.
وأشار فرج في مقدمة المعجم إلى أن فكرته بدأت منذ عام 1971 حين لاحظ بعد تخرجه في كلية الهندسة اختلافا في نطق الحرفيين لبعض أسماء أجزاء السيارة عن الأسماء العلمية مثل "رداخ" و"شكمان". وتساءل "هل يعتقد السائقون أن الشكمان يشكم الموتور كما تشكم الشكيمة".
وقال إن التكنولوجيا الجديدة تأتي محملة باسمها ولهذا "سقط مصطلح الحاسوب أمام الكمبيوتر رغم عجز الأخير عن الدلالة الوظيفية لهذا الجهاز وسيستمر (مصطلح الكمبيوتر) محليا وعالميا طبقا لقاعدة أن المصطلح الأول هو المصطلح الأخير".
ووصف العامية المصرية بأنها تتمتع "بثراء غير عادي حيث تتمتع بكثرة المترادفات فمثلا (سبنسة - شنجي - ترسو) كلها بمعنى الأخير أو المتخلف و(مناخوليا – مورستان - عباسية - خانكة - حالة السرايا الصفرا - بتنجان) كلها أوصاف لشخص مريض نفسيا أو غير مستقر عقليا.
"الثراء غير العادي للعامية في الاختلاف أيضا فمثلا (الكهنة) تختلف عن (الخردة) وتختلف عنهما (العوارية) رغم أن هذه المصطلحات تحمل ضمنا معاني مثل (تالف – فاسد - مستغنى عنه)".
وأشار فرج إلى أن ما يقوله العامة في الشارع المصري ليس كله هذرا ضاربا المثل بتعبير يبدو للوهلة الأولى خادشا للذوق وهو (فسا كلاب) الذي قال إنه سمعه وهو تلميذ في وصف رائحة زهرة غريبة في حديقة المدرسة ثم سمعه من والده الصيدلي يصف به رائحة صابون لم تعجبه.
وأضاف أنه قرأ هذا التعبير في وصف بعض نباتات أسوار الحدائق في منازل القاهرة للكاتب المصري البارز يحيى حقي (1805 - 1992) "وهو أديب كبير ممن لا يلقون بالكلمات جزافا... ثم عثرت على تعبير (فساء الكلاب) مع صورة للنبات ووصف كامل له في كتاب (عن الزهور العشبية في مصر لأستاذ علم تصنيف النبات) الدكتور لطفي بولس ولجأت إلى (المعجم العربي الحديث) (للبناني) الدكتور سعيد الجر فوجدت (فساء الكلاب.. نبات كريه الرائحة)".
وقال إن وجود بقايا للغات التركية والفارسية والايطالية والفرنسية يرجع إلى إنشاء محمد علي (1805 - 1848) مدارس حربية في فترة تأسيس الجيش المصري حيث "كان يدرس في بعض هذه المدارس الحربية اللغات العربية والتركية والفارسية. كما كانت اللغة التركية تدرس أيضا في المدارس المصرية الرسمية حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر".
وأضاف أن المصانع الحربية والمدنية التي أنشأها محمد علي كان لها تأثير في إدخال تعبيرات دارجة في الشارع المصري حيث أحضر لها مهندسين وفنيين من بريطانيا وفرنسا وايطاليا ومالطة لتدريب الصناع المصريين.
وقال فرج إن المصطلح تتغير دلالته بمرور الزمن ضاربا المثل بكلمة (بلطجي) التي كانت تعني حامل البلطة باللغة التركية "ومنذ قيام الدولة العثمانية كان الجنود البلطجية يتقدمون القوات الغازية يقطعون الأشجار بالبلط ويشقون طريقا أمام القوات المتقدمة وكان دورهم أيضا عمل فتحات أو هدم أجزاء في جدران الحصون والقلاع حتى تقتحمها قوات المشاة".
"ولم تكن كلمة بلطجي تحمل معاني سيئة بل أن (بلجة جي مصطفى باشا) كان واليا على مصر قبل الدولة العثمانية (1752 - 1755). وفي عصر محمد علي كانت قوات البلطجية موجودة في الجيش المصري. وفي الثلث الأول من القرن العشرين أصبحت (بلطجي) صفة سيئة وتعني الشخص المستهتر الأقرب إلى الفتوات في الحياة الشعبية المصرية في فترات سابقة".
وأشار إلى صدور قانون مصري في السنوات القليلة السابقة "لمكافحة أعمال البلطجة وترويع الأمنين. وهكذا أصبح البلطجي مجرما".

»حواديت الأمثال العامية« تبرز فلسفة الشعب المصري

الأمثال العامية وماتمثله من خلاصة فكر وثقافة الشعب المصري استوقفت المؤلف محمد عبدالمقصود فألف كتابه "حواديت الأمثال العامية" ليتناول فيه الأمثال العامية المصرية باعتبارها مرآة صادقة تعكس طبيعة الشعب المصري العريق، هذا الشعب العريق الذي يشتهر بخفة الدم والروح في أحلك الأوقات.
والأمثال الشعبية تعكس بساطة الشعب وفلسفته العميقة ومراحل تطورها، وتبرز تاريخ مصر في مختلف الأزمنة في عصور الرخاء والشدة والظلم والقهر والعدل والمساواة.
ويعرض المؤلف ما أورده أحمد تيمور في كتابه "الأمثال العامية" وفائقة حسين راغب في "حدائق الأمثال العامية" والدكتور احمد أمين في كتابه "قاموس العادات والتقاليد والتعابير المصرية" الذي أورد فيه الكثير من الأمثال الشائعة. وأيضا تجارب رواد الأدب الشعبي أمثال أحمد رشدي صالح والدكتور عبدالحميد يونس ومحمد فهمي عبداللطيف وزكريا الحجاوي والدكتورة سهير القلماوي.
وأشار محمد عبدالمقصود إلي الأمثال الشعبية التي تمثل فلسفة الجماهير، وهي التي تصف أخلاقهم وعاداتهم وشاهد عدل علي حالة لغتهم، وصورة لتفاعل الشعوب مع البيئة التي يعيشون فيها، وعصارة تجاربهم، وتسجل صفات المجتمعات وأخلاق أفراده ونفسياتهم ومعاملاتهم ومعتقاداتهم مصاغة في سياق لفظي رشيق، وعمق في المعني واللفظ، وتركيب الصورة.
وتناول المؤلف الأمثال والبحث العلمي باعتبار أنها تلعب دورا بارزا في تقدم البحث العلمي، ويجد كل من الباحث الاجتماعي والمؤرخ السياسي ودارس التراث الشعبي والأدب مادة خصبة في الأمثال ومعينا لاينضب في دراساتهم عن تطور الشعوب، لأنها تعكس صورة صادقة للحياة اليومية للشعب.
ومن مميزات الأمثال أنه لايعرف قائلها.. فهي تنبع من كل طبقات الشعب، فقد يقول المثل عجوز في صحن دارها، أو فلاح في حقله، أو عامل حرفي في ورشته، أو مراكبي في عرض النهر. وأنها تنتشر بين الأميين والبيئات التي تعتمد علي الثقافة الشفهية. والأمثال مثل الأمم خالدة، ومثل الأيام متناقضة، فقد نري مثلا ونقيضه ويرجع ذلك لاختلاف الزمن الذي قيل فيه المثل والظروف الاجتماعية والسياسية التي يمر بها الشعب.
ويسوق كتاب "حواديت الأمثال" المناسبة التي يتناولها المثل فيضرب مثل "يا فاحت البير ومغطيه مسيرك يوم تقع فيه" للساعي في إيذاء الناس ونصب المكائد لهم، لأنه لابد وان يقع فيما ينصبه لغيره.
ويحكي أيضا قصة المثل والظروف التي قيل فيها وخلاصة التجربة وتلخيصها في كلام موجز، للتعبير عن الموقف فمثل "اللي اختشوا ماتوا" يضرب لمن يفعل المنكر أو يقول الألفاظ الفاضحة أو يفعل الفعل القبيح دون أن يردعه حياؤه أو احترامه للآخرين، ويعبر الإنسان العامي عن كلمة "الحياء" بالخشي وهي الخشية.
ومثل "رجعت ريمة لعادتها القديمة" يضرب لمن تحكمه العادة ولايستطيع الاستغناء عن عادته حتي وإن تغيرت به الأحوال.
وريمة هي امرأة كانت تحترف الشحاذة والتسول من الناس، رزقها الله برجل أغناها عن ذل السؤال ولكن العادة التي استعبدتها اعادتها الي التسول مرة أخري. فلما رآها الناس تعجبوا من خصالها، وأنها رغم عدم حاجتها، عادت للتسول من جديد فقالوا "رجعت ريمة لعادتها القديمة".
ومثله "جوزوا الشحَّاته تتغنْي حطت لقمة في الطاقة وقالت ياستي حسنة".. ومثله "غنوها ما اتغنت وقالت ياستي قرقوشة". وكذلك "كيد النسا غلب كيد الرجال" ويضرب لبيان أن كيد النساء أقوي من كيد الرجال ويحكي قصته والظروف التي أدت إليه.
وغير ذلك من الأمثال ذات الدلالات الواضحة مثل "ابن الديب مايترباش"، و"بكره عمره مايخلصش" و"يتعلم الحلاقة في رءوس الأيتام"، و"علي قلبها لطلون" و"فوق الجمل وعضة الكلب" "وما اقدرش أقول البغل في الإبريق" و"دقة بدقة ولو زدنا لزاد السقا" و"اللي مايعرفش يقول عدس، ومال الكنزي للنزهي، وطظ ياعاشور، الرجل عيبه جيبه، النعجة المدبوحة مايوجعهاش السلخ، جوع كلبك يتبعك والكلب يأكل صاحبه إن لم ينل ما يشبعه.
ويؤكد محمد عبدالمقصود أن هذه الأمثال العامية وقصصها تختلف من مكان إلي مكان ومن زمن إلي زمن، حيث قدم رحلة ممتعة في أعماق حياتنا الشعبية، لتبرز جانبا من تاريخ الشعب المصري وحكمة الشعب والروح المرحة التي تميزه عن غيره من الشعوب.

يعتبر المثل ظاهرة فريدة ومتميزة في الآداب العالمية، نظرا لطبيعته اللغوية والتركيبية، وإيجازه الشديد ودلالته العميقة، بالإضافة إلى أنه خلاصة تجربة يعبر عنها بالرمز أو الإيحاء أو الإشارة المباشرة في شتى ميادين الحياة اليومية، ويعالج حالاتها من خلال الوقائع والعادات والتقاليد والممارسات، وهو بكل صيغه يظل معبرا عن حكمة الشعوب، وخلاصة تجاربهم، ورؤيتهم للأشياء المحيطة بهم، وما بأنفسهم وخباياهم، وقد أبرز الترمذي طبيعة الأمثال بقوله على أنها: "نموذجات الحكمة لما غاب عن الأسماع والأبصار لتهدي النفوس أدركت عيانا" وهي بالنسبة إليه "مرآة النفوس".
اهتم العديد من علماء اللغة بجمع الأمثال، واستطاعوا الإحاطة بعدد هائل منها عبر العصور مع بعد نظر بمضامينها، وهذا ما عبر عنه ابن عبد ربه بقوله: "ونحن قائلون بعون الله وتوفيقه في الأمثال التي هي وشي الكلام وجوهر اللفظ، وحلي المعاني والتي تخيرتها العرب وقدمتها العجم ونطق بها في كل مكان، وعلى كل لسان، فهي أبقى من الشعر وأشرف من الخطابة، لم يسر شيء مسيرها، ولا عم عمومها، حتى قيل: أسير من مثل". توضح هذه الرؤية الثاقبة القيمة التعبيرية للمثل على صعيد الآداب العالمية، وتضعه في أعلى مراتب التعبير شعرا وخطابة، وإذا ما تصفحنا عناوين الكتب القديمة الخاصة بالأمثال منذ القرن الثاني للهجرة، فإننا نجدها محصورة في: أمثال العرب، مجمع الأمثال، جمهرة الأمثال، الفرائد والقلائد، كل هذه العناوين تحيل على الجمع بما فيها الجمهرة لأبي هلال، وهو بدوره يحيل بشكل أو بآخر على جمهرة ابن دريد باعتباره معجما لغويا جاء تطويرا لمعجم العين للخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي.
على ماذا اعتمد الجمع إذا؟ وهل هناك منهجية معينة اتبعت في هذا الصدد؟
لقد عرف جمع الأمثال خلال القرون الخمسة الأولى للهجرة تطورا مرحليا تجلى في ثلاثة اتجاهات:
ـ الجمع والتدوين.
ـ التصنيف الموضوعاتي.
ـ التصنيف المعجمي (أي الترتيب حسب حروف المعجم).
من أوائل الكتب التي أشارت إليها الفهارس والمصادر اللغوية، كتاب أمثال العرب لعبيد بن شرية (ت 81هـ) وكتاب أمثال العرب للمفضل الضبي (ت 171هـ) الذي اهتم بتفسير السياق الذي جاء فيه المثال مع شرح ألفاظه مثل "أسعد أم سعيد" و"إن الحديث لذو شجون" وكتاب الأمثال لمؤرج بن عمرو السدوسي (ت 195هـ). لقد اهتمت أغلب الكتب الأولى بالشرح والتعليق اللغوي على "أسماء غير معروفة أو تشير إلى أحداث مجهولة، أو تجيء بتعبير غير مألوف، أو صياغة نادرة الاستعمال، فيكون هذا كله مجالا متسعا لاجتهاد النحاة وإظهار علم اللغويين وافتتان الرواة والقصاص".
ويلاحظ أن أغلب الكتب التي ألفت في هذه المرحلة وقد ضاع العديد منها كانت من وضع اللغويين الذين قاموا بجمعها وتدوينها، وقد وصلت ذروتها كما أوضح ذلك د.محمد النجار بكتاب الفاخر في الأمثال للمفضل بن سلمة بن عاصم الضبي 291هـ، ويحق لنا أن نقول: "كل عالم لغوي –غالبا- هو جامع أمثال، وكل جامع أمثال هو عالم لغوي بالضرورة طبقا لمعطيات هذه المرحلة المبكرة".
التصنيف الموضوعاتي:
يعد التصنيف الموضوعاتي من أهم المناهج التي اعتمدها العلماء العرب في تصنيف العلوم في عدة مجالات، منها الحديث والفقه واللغة والمعاجم، وليس من المستغرب أن يظهر هذا النوع من التصنيف باعتباره "أول تصنيف علمي نهجه علماء الأمثال العرب وأن يكون سابقا على التصنيف المعجمي الألفبائي". إلا أننا لا نستطيع تأكيد عدم ظهور كتب في الأمثال اعتمدت على الترتيب الألفبائي في المرحلة الأولى، وأن يكون هناك تداخل في المراحل كما هو الشأن في تطور ترتيب المعاجم العربية، إذ أن ظهور معاجم لغوية ذات مناهج مختلفة في الترتيب قد عرفت تداخلا فيما بينها، وليس هناك تسلسلا مرحليا بكل منهج على حدة، وعلى سبيل المثال وجدنا كتابا لمؤلف مجهول رتبت فيه الأمثال أبوابا وحسب الترتيب الألفبائي وقد بدأه بقوله: "باب ما جاء من الأمثال أوله ألفا على مذهب الكتاب أو همزة على مذهب النحويين، ما جاء على أفعل مع الباء، ثم التاء، ثم الثاء، ثم الجيم إلى آخر الحروف الهجائية"، أي جعله مرتبا على حروف الهجاء.
لقد اعتمد تصنيف الأمثال حسب الموضوعات منذ أواخر القرن الثاني وبداية القرن الثالث الهجري على منهجية دقيقة أدت إلى إبراز مضامينها في مختلف مجالات الحياة، وإخراجها من كتب التاريخ والفقه والنحو والمعاجم والطب والفلسفة والجغرافية والفلاحة والرواية، الأمر الذي أظهر ضخامتها ومتانتها وقيمتها العلمية، وأول من نهج هذا النهج هو أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام (ت 224هـ) في كتابه الأمثال، وهو أحد كبار علماء اللغة والحديث في عصره. وإذا كان حسه اللغوي قد قاده إلى استكشاف مادة الأمثال والتمييز بين مستوياتها فإنه تمكن أيضا من استكشاف ما تضمنه من أبعاد أدبية وفنية في مختلف موضوعات الحياة، إذ جعل كتابه أبوابا "بذكر المواطن التي يضرب فيها المثل من الأمثال" وقد بلغت تسعة عشرة بابا، كل باب يتضمن موضوعا بعينه (صنوف المنطق ومعائب المنطق ومساوئه –الرجال- الأقوام- الأقربون – الأخلاق – الجود – المجد – الخلة والإخاء – الأموال والمعاش – العلم والمعرفة – أهل الألباب والحزم – الحوائج – الظلم – المعائب والذم – الخطأ والزلل – البخل - الجبن – مرازى الدهر وأحداثه – جنايات الدواهي العظام).
هذا بالإضافة إلى أحد عشر بابا قصيرا في الأمثال الخاصة بـ: التشبيه وغايته – اللقاء وأوقاته وأزمانه – ترك اللقاء ودهوره وآونته – النفي لمعرفة الرجل – نفي المال عن الرجل – ما يتكلم فيه بالنفي من الناس خاصة – نفي الطعام – نفي النوم والأوجاع – الاستهجال ونفي العلم – الطعام.
كانت هذه مجموعة الأبواب الواردة في كتاب أبي عبيد وما تفرع منها، إذ كان كل باب يتفرع إلى عدة أبواب، أكثرها كان يصل إلى ثمانية وعشرين بابا وأقلها إلى ستة أبواب، وقد بلغت في مجموعها 251 بابا فرعيا، وبلغ عدد الأمثال 1000 مثل و20 بيت شعر و130 حديثا مع قصصها.
ومن الكتب التي نهجت نهج أبي عبيد كتاب جامع الأمثال لأحمد بن إبراهيم بن سمكة اللقمي (ت 530هـ)، أشار إليه السيوطي في المزهر، والقفطي في إنباه الرواة وقال عنه محمد النجار "إنه كان أكبر من كتاب أبي عبيد وأكثر تفصيلا ولأن الكتاب مفقود فأوجه الشبه بين تصنيف أبي عبيد الأمثال وتصنيف ابن سمكة لا تعدو في نظرنا أن تنحصر في التصنيف الموضوعي فحسب، ولكنه ليس بالضرورة طبقا لمضارب الأمثال كما ذهب إليه أبو عبيد".
ومن بين الكتب التي اتجهت نهج أبي عبيد كتاب الجوهرة في الأمثال لابن عبد ربه المدرج في العقد الفريد. وسيعود أبو عبيد البكري (ت 487هـ) في القرن الخامس إلى كتاب أبي عبيد بن سلام ليتناوله بالشرح في مؤلف تحت عنوان فصل المقال في شرح كتاب الأمثال. ويبدو أن منهجية تصنيف الأمثال حسب الموضوعات قد وجدت صداها في الأندلس في الوقت الذي ظهرت فيه مؤلفات عن الأمثال اتجهت نحو التصنيف الألفبائي حسب حروف المعجم.
ولقد تم تطوير منهجية التصنيف الموضوعاتي على يد أبي منصور الثعالبي، حيث عمد إلى تحويرها والتدقيق في طبيعة الأمثال وحقولها الدلالية والقدرة على استرجاعها في مؤلف شامل لها أسماه التمثيل والمحاضرة. ولقد استفاد من مؤلفي المعاجم اللغوية الذين اهتموا بترتيب المادة حسب المعاني "فاستلهم خطاهم وسار على نهجهم، وشرع يشيد تصنيفه على أساس المعاني أو الحقول أو المجالات الدلالية للأمثال".
ومع كل الأهمية التي اكتساها كتاب التمثيل والمحاضرة للثعالبي في مجال تصنيف الأمثال حسب موضوعاتها وما أضافه من جهد علمي وتصنيف منطقي، ستتجه أنظار علماء اللغة إلى تصنيف آخر قائم على ترتيب الأمثال معجميا، تحت تأثير ما عرفته حركة تأليف المعاجم من تطور هائل في مجال الترتيب.
التصنيف المعجمي:
لا شك أن حركة تأليف المعاجم العربية منذ ظهور كتاب العين للفراهيدي كان لها تأثير بالغ فيما يمس جمع وتدوين الأمثال العربية، حيث اتجه علماء اللغة المهتمين بها إلى إعادة النظر في تصنيفها، وهذا بالضبط ما قام به حمزة بن الحسن الأصفهاني (ت 439هـ) عندما ألف كتابا في الأمثال أسماه الدرة الفاخرة في الأمثال السائرة. وكان اختياره للتصنيف المعجمي تطورا منهجيا في جمع الأمثال حيث رتبه على "نظام حروف المعجم ليسهل تناول ما يراد منه على ملتمسه". وسار على منواله فيما بعد كل من أبي هلال العسكري (ت 395هـ) عندما ألف كتابه جمهرة الأمثال وجار الله الزمخشري (ت 518هـ) في كتابه المستقصى في أمثال العرب وأبو الفضل أحمد بن محمد الميداني في مجمع الأمثال وقد أكد هذا الأخير بدوره أن اختياره وضع الأمثال على نظام الترتيب المعجمي كان يهدف منه حسب قوله: "ليسهل طريق الطلب على متناولها" وبالأخص عندما نكون إزاء عدد ضخم من الأمثال، وإذا كان جامعو الأمثال باعتبارهم علماء لغة قد وجدوا في النظام المعجمي ضالتهم لترتيب المادة المثلية فإن هذا لا يلغي أهمية الترتيب الموضوعاتي لكونه يمثل أداة تنظيمية استرجاعية لمادة الأمثال في مجالاتها الدلالية، وسيظل كتاب التمثيل والمحاضرة للثعالبي نموذجا في هذا الصدد، وكما قال عنه محمد رجب النجار "عمدة كتب الأمثال العربية القديمة في مجال التصنيف الموضوعي الدلالي".
الأمثال العامية:
لقد اعتنى القدماء بجمع الأمثال، مع وجود العديد منها في كتب اللغة والأدب، وما كان يرويه الرواة أو النحاة لتدعيم آرائهم اللغوية، حيث كان الغرض منها تأكيد "صحة اللغة وإقامة الإعراب، وهذا يستلزم ضرورة أن يكون المثل قديم العهد صحيح النقل". ولا شك أن الرواة لم يكونوا يهتمون بالأمثال السائرة والمتداولة عند العامة لأن الهاجس اللغوي وسلامة اللغة كانت تتحكم في تحديد معيار المثل و"لم يأخذوه من أفواه العرب في حياتهم اليومية وحديثهم العادي بقدر ما أخذوه من نصوص الأشعار العربية القديمة التي بذلوا الجهد في روايتها وتدوينها"، ومع هذا التأكيد هناك العديد من الأمثال تخرج عن هذا السياق وإن احتفظت بتركيب لغوي سليم وفصيح، ونجدها في أغلب المؤلفات القديمة، ويكفي أن نعود إلى مقدمة أبي هلال العسكري لنستشف من خلالها أن عملية الجمع بالنسبة للمؤلفات التي وقف عليها وأخذ منها، كانت تمتد إلى كل ما يمت إلى المثل بصلة بغض النظر عن طبيعته اللغوية، إذ يقول: "وميزت ما أورده حمزة الأصفهاني من الأمثال المضروبة في التناهي والمبالغة، وهي الأمثال على أفعل من كذا، فأوردت منها ما كان منها عربيا صحيحا، ونفيت المولد السقيم ليبرأ كتابي من العيب الذي لزم كتاب حمزة في اشتماله على غث من أمثال المولدين وحشو الحضريين، فصارت العلماء تلقيه وتسقطه وتنفيه".
وواضح من كلام أبي هلال العسكري أن مجتمع العلماء مجمع على إبقاء المكتوب عربيا فصيحا، وإذا ذكر بعض أمثال العامة في ثنايا الكتاب فإنه يذكرها عرضا وبصيغة فصيحة، وهذا ما فعله ابن عبد ربه والبكري.
تعريب الأمثال:
لقد شكلت اللغة العربية عند العلماء العرب، مفتاح التأليف، وأضحت معيارا للتمكن من العلوم والتفقه فيها، ولا شك أن تعريبهم للأمثال العامية يوضح مدى تشبثهم بالفصيح كأداة للتعامل مع المعرفة، وهذا ما يفسر خلو تآليفهم من لغة العامة في مرحلة التدوين والجمع، ولم يهتموا بكل ما له علاقة بها، وإذا ما تقصينا بعض كتب اللغة وما يتعلق بألفاظ العامة، يمكن أن نستشف بعض المظاهر في لغة العامة، ويعد كتاب ابن هشام اللحمي (ت 577هـ) لحن العامة الذي وضعه من أجل إعادة ألفاظ العامة إلى أصولها العربية، وما كان متداولا عندهم من أمثال وجمل، مرجعا أوليا من مراجع البحث في الآداب الشفوية، وتلاه فيما بعد ابن مكي الصقلي (القرن السادس) في كتابه تثقيف اللسان وتلقيح الجنان وابن عاصم الغرناطي في القرن الثامن.
إلا أن هذا التعريب لم يستطع أن يصمد طويلا ولو مع حرص علماء اللغة الذين اهتموا بتدوين الأمثال وجمعها وفرز ما جاء على ألسن العامة، إذ أن ما عرفته المجتمعات العربية من تحولات ومتغيرات أدت إلى تداخل أمثال الفصيح والعامي، ولم يعد بالإمكان إقصاء ثروة مثلية أضحت متداولة بين العامة والخاصة على حد سواء، على الرغم من حرص أبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام على انتقائه لمادة الأمثال التي جمعها، إلا أنه مع ذلك اضطر إلى إيراد عدد محدود منها على سبيل "المقارنة أو المماثلة". وهذا الانتقاء برره أبو عبيد البكري في تأكيد حرصه على تمييز "الأمثال المأثورة، المنقولة والمحمولة والمروية المحكية عن العرب"، إلا أن هذا الاحتراز من أمثال العامة سيعرف انعطافا مهما على يد المفضل بن سلمة بن عاصم في كتابه الفاخر، حيث أوضح بصريح العبارة أن "هذا كتاب معاني ما يجري على ألسن العامة في أمثالهم ومحاوراتهم من كلام العرب، وهم لا يدرون معنى ما يتكلمون به من ذلك، فبيناه من وجوهه، على اختلاف العلماء في تفسيره، ليكون من نظر في هذا الكتاب عالما بما يجري من لفظه، ويدور في كلامه". وأعتقد أن هذه القولة بليغة العبارة والدلالة في تحديد ماهية الأمثال الشعبية، وتحل إشكالا علميا فيما يمس طبيعة الأمثال بغض النظر عن انتمائها إلى الفصيح أو العامي، ويحسم أمرا عالقا كما أوضحه محمد رجب النجار وهي "أن أمثال العرب المأثورة ليست أمثالا شعبية فحسب –فهذا لا جدال فيه- ولكنها هي نفسها الأمثال الشعبية التي كانت ذائعة بين العوام خلال العصر الذهبي لجمع الأمثال العربية وتصنيفها"، مما يجعلنا نؤكد أن الاهتمام بالرواية العامية قد شقت طريقها منذ القرن الثالث الهجري على الرغم من احترازات العديد من أئمة اللغة، إذ أن استعمال وتداول الأمثال بين جميع الأوساط الخاصة أو العامة منها كان هو المعيار الذي تحكم في نهاية المطاف في الجمع والتدوين.
سيعرف هذا التوجه منحى جديدا في بلاد الأندلس، وفي ضوء الجهد العلمي الذي بذله أبو عبيد البكري عندما تصدى لشرح كتاب أبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام، إذ سيتسع الاهتمام بلغة العامة لاعتبارات تاريخية وجغرافية واجتماعية، وهو اهتمام لم يكن على حساب اللغة العربية الفصيحة.
لقد ترك لنا أهل الأندلس، تراثا لغويا عاميا، تمثل في الأزجال والموشحات والأمثال العامية، أضحى من مواد التأريخ لفهم طبيعتهم وذهنيتهم وقضايا مجتمعهم، ولأن اللغة المتداولة تعد تعبيرا عن النسق الفكري السائد داخل المجتمع، وإذا ما تقصينا بعض كتب اللغة وما يتعلق بألفاظ العامة يمكن أن نستشف ظواهر هامة في حياة جماعة ما.
لم يكن كتاب ابن عاصم الغرناطي حدائق الأزهار خارجا عن السياق العام لطبيعة المجتمع الأندلسي عندما اتجه إلى جمع الأمثال العامية الأندلسية المتداولة في غرناطة، وأعتقد أن عنوان كتابه لوحده يشكل مادة للتفكير وللتأويل، في غياب وضوح المقاصد التي كان يصبو إليها، مما يطرح بعض التساؤلات، هل ابن عاصم كان يريد رد الاعتبار إلى لغة العامة وما تعبق به من أريج استنادا إلى عنوان الكتاب، واعتبار ذلك مدخلا لإثارة الاهتمام إلى هذا النوع من الآداب؟ وهل قاده إلى ذلك إحساس داخلي بضرورة تسجيل مادة ثقافية ذات جذور شعبية، يخاف عليها من الضياع؟ مع العلم أن هناك بداية محتشمة لابن عبد ربه عندما حاول أن يضم بعض أمثال العامة، ولو أنه قام بتعريبها، إذ يقول في الجوهرة: "وضممنا إلى أمثلة العرب القديمة ما جرى على ألسنة العامة من الأمثال المستعملة"، بالإضافة إلى ما أكده في تقديمه لمجموع الأمثال التي أوردها: "فأول ما نبدأ به أمثال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم أمثال العلماء، ثم أمثال أكثم بن صيفي، وبزر جمهر الفارسي، وهي التي كان يستعملها جعفر بن يحي في كلامه، ثم أمثال العرب التي رواها أبو عبيد وما أشبهها من أمثال العامة، ثم الأمثال التي استعملها الشعراء في أشعارهم في الجاهلية والإسلام"، مع العلم أن ابن عبد ربه لم يورد إلا أمثالا قليلة ومحدودة من أمثال العامة مع صياغتها بلغة فصيحة.
وبغض النظر عن المقاصد في وعيها أولا وعيها، فلقد تمكن ابن عاصم بأن يلم في حدود ثمانمائة مثل بأهم الأمثال السائرة على ألسنة العامة، وسجل بذلك أحاسيس مواطنيه ورؤيتهم الطبيعية للأشياء في بساطتها وأريحتها، وما كان يضج به المجتمع الأندلسي من تناقضات في شتى المجالات (دين، طوائف، سياسة، نساء، قيم).
ولم يقف الأندلسيون عند جمع الأمثال العامية، ولكن بدأوا ينظمون أشعارهم بالعامية، وهذا انزياح آخر باللغة، وقد مثل ابن قزمان هذا التوجه خير تمثيل.
الأمثال العامية في الأقطار العربية منذ عصر النهضة.
على الرغم من موقف بعض الرواة وعلماء اللغة من الأمثال العامية، فإن الرواية العامية استطاعت أن تفرض وجودها على يد المفضل بن سلمة بن عاصم، كما استطاع أهل الأندلس أن يدخلوها إلى حدائق أزهارهم، وقد تركوا لنا تراثا هاما تناوله باحثون معاصرون بالدرس والتحليل والتمحيص والتحقيق، وعلى سبيل المثال: أبحاث عبد العزيز الأهواني، وعبد الرحيم يونس، بالإضافة إلى العمل العلمي الذي أنجزه د.محمد بنشريفة حول أمثال العوام في الأندلس عندما حقق كتاب أحمد الزجالي القرطبي (ت694هـ) وأبحاث د.جليل العطية ود.محمد رجب النجار، هذا بالإضافة إلى ظهور مجلات علمية متخصصة في التراث الشعبي.
لقد احتلت الأمثال في مجال البحث العلمي حيزا مهما وخصبا للتنقيب في الآداب العربية الشفوية كما هو الشأن بالنسبة للبحث الأوروبي الذي اتجه خلال القرن السابع عشر لدراسة الآداب الشعبية والمأثورات الشفوية والفولكلورية في العديد من البلدان الأوروبية، واتجه بعض المستشرقين إلى الاهتمام بالتراث الشفوي للشعوب العربية منذ أواخر القرن التاسع عشر.
من بين المؤلفات الخاصة بالأمثال التي ظهرت في هذه الفترة يمكن ترتيبها كما يلي:
Carlo Landsberg, Proverbes et dictions du peuple arabe de la province de Syrie, Leyde, 1883.
ـ نعوم شقير، أمثال العوام في مصر والسودان والشام، مطبعة المعارف، مصر، 1894.
ـ محمد أحمد عمر الباجوري، أمثال المتكلمين من عوام المصريين، ط.الشرقية، 1894.
ـ يوسف خانكي، مجموعة أمثال عامية مصر، ط.البيان، 1897.
وختمت هذه الفترة بمؤلفين أعتبرهما من أهم ما صدر عنها من أمثال، ومن أغناهما مادة.
ـ المؤلف الأول حول: الأمثال العامية في لبنان الجنوبي لصاحبه فردينان يوسف أبلا.
ـ المؤلف الثاني حول: الأمثال العامية المصرية لصاحبه أحمد تيمور باشا.
كيف تعامل إذا كل واحد منهما مع مادة الأمثال المتجمعة لديهما ترتيبا وتصنيفا؟
لا شك أن إشكالية الترتيب تطرح على كل باحث عندما ينتهي من عملية تجميع الأمثال وذلك من أجل تسهيل البحث فيها والاستفادة من مادتها، ولقد أسهم القدماء كما رأينا في وضع منهجيتين للتعامل مع الأمثال.
ـ منهجية التصنيف الموضوعاتي.
ـ منهجية الترتيب المعجمي.
وأود أن أوضح هنا أنه لا توجد أفضلية بين المنهجيتين المذكورتين، إذ لكل منهما لها خاصيتها ووجاهتها، وحسب ما يراه جامع الأمثال مناسبا، وما يدخل في سياق الأغراض المتوخاة من عملية جمعها واستخدامها ونشرها، ويبقى الجمع هو القاعدة المشتركة عند أغلب الباحثين الذين اهتموا بالأمثال ونشرها في كتب، وبعد ذلك تطرح إشكالية التصنيف أو الترتيب، آنذاك نكون بصدد تناول إحدى قضايا المعجم، مع العلم أن أغلب الكتب التي تضم مجموع الأمثال لا تشير أنها تقدم معجما بخلاف العديد من المؤلفات الغربية الجامعة للأمثال.
أعتقد على سبيل المثال أن الميداني كان واعيا بهذه المفارقة فسمى مؤلفه بمجمع الأمثال ولم يطلق عليه معجما، لكن هل يحق لنا أن نسمي مجمع الأمثال معجما؟
سأترك جانبا هذه الإشكالية للحوار، وسأعرض أولا لمؤلفي أبلا وتيمور لنتعرف على طبيعة الإشكالات التي يطرحها جمع الأمثال تصنيفا أو ترتيبا، مع العلم أنهما يختلفان من حيث الترتيب ويلتقيان بصورة من الصور من حيث منهجية تقديم المثل للقارئ.
ما هي إذا منهجية كل منهما وأين يلتقيان؟ وأين يختلفان؟
يعتبر مؤلف فردينان يوسف أبلا من أهم المؤلفات الخاصة بالأمثال العامية من حيث التقديم والشرح والترجمة، إلا أنه لم يعتمد أي نوع من الترتيب، والمنهجية الوحيدة التي اعتمدها في الجزء الأول الذي يضم 1947 مثلا يمكن تلخيصها فيما يلي:
ـ تقديم المثل بلغته العامية.
ـ إعادة كتابته بالحروف اللاتينية.
ـ ترجمته إلى اللغة الفرنسية.
ـ تعليق أدبي حول طبيعة المثل ودلالاته الاجتماعية أو الفكرية.
ـ تقديم حكاية تصويرية أو حكاية شعبية تمس جوهر المثل.
ـ تقديم إحالة تتضمن الإشارة إلى ما يشبهه من أمثال سواء داخل متن الأمثال الواردة في المؤلف أو الإحالة على أمثال عربية أو غربية أو عامة في العديد من الأقطار.
ونقدم هنا نماذج من معجم أبلا.

2 – 909 عمر اعطيني وبالبحر ارميني

Maxime fataliste : on ne risque rien si l'on est prédestiné à vivre.

3 – 380 اللي اله عمر ما بتقتله شدة
'lli' lo mr ma b-t 'telo ? dde
Les épreuves ne tuent pas (n'achèvent pas) celui qui est appelé à vivre.
Maxime fataliste qui est aussi citée en Egypte : puisque tout est « écrit » (mektoub), il est vain de craindre pour sa vie.
أما الجزء الثاني الذي يضم 200 مثل نجده يكتفي فقط بـ:
ـ تقديم المثل بلغته العامية.
ـ إعادة كتابته بالحروف اللاتينية، أي دون ترجمة أو تعليق أو إحالة.
أما ما يتعلق بمؤلف الأمثال العامية المصرية لأحمد تيمور باشا الذي يضم 3188 مثلا، فلقد اعتمد المنهجية التالية القائمة على الترتيب الألفبائي:
ـ تقديم المثل بلغته العامية وبالشكل التام.
ـ شرح إن اقتضى الحال بعض المفردات المحورية باللغة العربية.
ـ شرح دلالة المثل ومغزاه الحكمي.
ـ تقديم إحالات تتضمن الإشارة إلى ما يشبهه من أمثال عربية فصيحة أو بعض الأمثال العامية الواردة في متن المؤلف.
وهذه بعض النماذج:
595 – "إن ضحك سني حيا مني وان ضحك قلبي عتبي عليه" أي إن ضحك فمي في مصيبتي فذلك حياء مني ومجاراة للناس لا سرورا وانشراحا، وإنما العتب على القلب لأنه موضع السرور والحزن ولا عبرة بالظواهر. وانظر في الباء الموحدة: (البق اهبل) وفي الضاد المعجمة: (الضحك ع الشفاتير) الخ. وانظر في الواو: (الوش مزين والقلب حزين).
770 – "برا ودره وجوا قرده"
يضرب في حسن الظاهر وقبح الباطن.
878 – "تحت البرافع سم ناقع"
أي لا يغرنك ما تراه من الظاهر الحسن فإن ما تحت البراقع سم قاتل. يضرب للحسن الظاهر القبيح الباطن.
900 – "تقعد تحت الحنية وتقول يا امه مالوش نيه"
يخصون الحنية بالتي تحت السلالم لا مطلق حنية، أي تقعد البنت البائرة تحت الحنية وتختبئ فيها خجلا ثم تسائل أمها وتقول: أما للخاطب نية في يا أماه، أي أين إظهارها الخجل من هذا السؤال. يضرب للذي يتظاهر بغير الحقيقة ثم تحمله الرغبة في الشيء على إظهارها.
وواضح من هذه الأمثلة أن المؤلف لم يلتزم بالمنهجية نفسها في كل الأمثال لاعتقاده أن العديد منها لا يحتاج إلى شرح ويعتبره مفهوما لدى القارئ.
وبجانب هذه المنهجية ذيل المؤلف بكشاف موضوعي، وضعه مركز الأهرام للترجمة والنشر وليس من وضع المؤلف. "النماذج المقدمة أعلاه تدخل في إطار موضوع الباطن والظاهر".
يعد هذا الكشاف إضافة منهجية لتصنيف الأمثال تحت رؤوس الموضوعات حسب مضامينها، وقد رتبت ترتيبا ألفابائيا، ويندرج تحت كل موضوع مجمل الأمثال المتعلقة به حسب أرقامها.
ما يمكن أن نستخلصه من هذا التقديم، هو أن هناك إشكالية كبرى فيما يتعلق بجمع الأمثال وترتيبها وفهرستها، وليست هناك منهجية مثلى للتعامل معها، وإذا أردنا أن نقوم بمسح شامل لها وتقديم لجميع أوجهها، فلا مناص من اعتماد منهجية الترتيب حسب الكلمة الأولى في المثل، بالإضافة إلى ترتيب يعتمد كلمات المفتاح في كل مثل، ثم اعتماد منهجية الموضوعات، وسنكون بطبيعة الحال أمام ثلاث مجلدات، وهو الأمر الذي أصبح بالإمكان إنجازه بالاعتماد على برنامج آلي.

Form and ideology: Arabic sociolinguistics and beyond

The aim of this review is to contribute to a dialogue between anthropologists and sociolinguists who work on the Arab world. One of the most distinctive features of the Arab world is that Classical Arabic co-exists with national vernaculars such as Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian, and so on. The first is the language of writing, education, and administration, whereas the latter are the media of oral exchanges, nonprint media, poetry, and plays. The proximity or distance between the "Classical" and the "colloquials," whether the latter are also "Arabic" or have been so accepting of foreign borrowings that they ceased to be so, whether they are languages or "inferior dialects" are all contentious issues that continue to be debated within the Arab world. In fact, such debates have become inseparable from the central concerns and dilemmas of social and intellectual movements in this century. After providing a broad outline of work in Arabic sociolinguistics, the review moves to the literature on education. Debates on education are intimately linked with larger questions regarding colonialism, nationalism, and modernization. The last part of the review is devoted to anthropological works on the region. The complexities of the sociolinguistic settings in the Arab world provide promising and challenging grounds for contributions to anthropological theory.

This book is a comparative study of the syntax of Arabic dialects based on natural language data recorded in Morocco, Egypt, Syria, and Kuwait. These four dialect regions are distinct and geographically diverse and representative of four distinct dialect groups. The analytical approach of the book is both functional and descriptive, combining insights from discourse analysis, language typology, and pragmatics--the first time such an approach has been used in the study of spoken Arabic syntax. THE GRADUAL DEATH OF THE BERBER LANGUAGE IN TUNISIA.

This article considers the Berbers and their language in Ibn Khaldoun's native Tunisia. Tunisia possesses a level of linguistic and cultural homogeneity found in few other countries around the world. Tunisian Berberphones account for less than one percent of the population. To understand multilingualism in Tunisia and indeed in the entire Maghreb, it is necessary to examine the contact between Berber and other languages. The Berber language was once one of the major languages of North Africa, spoken by some 10 million individuals living between Egypt in the east and Morocco in the west, between the Mediterranean in the north and the Sahara in the south. The earliest Berber inscriptions, dating from 139 BC, are found in Libya. The only surviving alphabet of the Berbers is called tifinagh, used among the Tuareg in the Sahara. Berber is a member of the Hamito-Semitic language family. Apart from the Tuareg dialects, other Berber dialects share many phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and lexical features. The eventual death of Tunisian Berber as an identity marker having a symbolic function does not make the demise of the Berbers inevitable. However, the loss of this language as a carrier of cultural knowledge and the difficulty of transmitting such knowledge into the Arabic language and community will make it even more challenging for Berbers to maintain traces of their rich heritage passed down through the centuries.
